Walk on Water - Liquid Mountaineering - Cool Science

Image
Liquid Mountaineering is a new sport which is attempting to achieve what man has tried to do for centuries: walk on water. Or to be more precise: running on water. We are developing the sport from scratch. By accident we found out that with the right water repellent equipment you can run across bodies of water, just like a stone skimming the surface. Liquid mountaineering is performed by professionals under professional supervision. Accordingly I must insist that attempting to do so is dangerous.

Milford Sound, New Zealand

Milford Sound, including the coach trip from TeAnau, is everything people said it would be.The only negative was biting flies at the dock and we wore bug spray so they weren't a problem. We passengered on the Wanderer, a masted vessel holding 80 people. We viewed falls, seals, and formations close up. It was mostly overcast. This is a very rainy area, so we did not expect to see the sun. The clouds added drama to the day, so low that the mountain tops pushed above them. The waterfalls were numerous, ranging from volumnous cascades to pencil-thin trickles. Mitre Peak appeared as a green mound near the boat dock.

NASA said debris fell to Earth between 11:23 p.m. ET Friday and 1:09 a.m. ET Saturday, but it was not immediately clear where the pieces may have landed. About two dozen pieces of the satellite were expected to survive the crash through the Earth's atmosphere. Late Friday night, NASA predicted satellite parts would pass "over Canada and Africa, as well as vast areas of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans." "The risk to public safety is very remote," NASA said. The 26 pieces expected to survive the descent -- made of stainless steel, titanium and beryllium that won't burn -- ranged from about 10 pounds to hundreds of pounds, according to NASA. "The U.S. is very safe from (the satellite) ... It...
